In the Waldorf Kindergarten the child’s imagination is nourished as a great treasure. Songs, poems, puppet plays and circle games tune the child’s ear to the beauty of language. Bread-baking, drawing, and painting awaken the senses. Experiences with natural materials — like wood, silk, and beeswax — appeal to the sense of touch and engender reverence for nature. Outside play, nature walks, and gardening allow the children to experience the joy of movement. The home-like environment eases the child’s transition from home life into school.
Literature is the cornerstone of the Waldorf curriculum. Beginning in early childhood and continuing through the grades, the stories of the world’s great civilizations — from fairy tales and fables in the early grades to world mythologies and history later on — accompany and augment the child’s experience of the breadth of human history.
Our kindergartens hosts up to 18 children daily from 8:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., five days per week. The age range for this two-year, mixed-aged program is four to six, and children should be four years old by June 1, prior to the beginning of the school year. Extended care is available until 4:00 p.m.
The Seattle Waldorf School has three kindergartens, Rosemary and Lavender at the Kinderhaus campus, and Briar Rose at the main campus.
