Preschool

The Seattle Waldorf School preschool offers young children nourishment for their imaginations, physical challenges for their bodies and a loving, beautiful environment for their hearts.

Every morning the children enjoy being outside and inside. Splashing in puddles, marveling at the budding daffodils, or running with the winds brings a glow to their round cheeks. Indoor time gives the children time to learn to play together. Homemade snacks keep them fueled for mornings filled with movement and fun.

Seasonal activities and festivals mark the rhythm of the changing natural world throughout the year. In the fall the children grind and savor sweet applesauce. In the winter they make lanterns to lighten the darkness, and in the spring they herald in the new life with a small parade in the neighborhood.

General Information

Our preschool hosts up to 8 children daily from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Children should be three years old by September 1, prior to the beginning of the school year, and should be potty trained. Parents may choose a two-day, three-day or five-day program. The preschool follows the Seattle Waldorf School calendar.

Our Marigold and Lupine teacher, Martha Swain, brings to the preschool a loving, enthusiastic presence, a deep interest in child development, four years of kindergarten work at SWS and her own mothering experience. She has both Waldorf and public school training as part of her Master’s in Education degree. Martha annually attends a Waldorf teaching conference.

Our Daffodil teacher, Gina Burger combines her gentle, loving approach with her interest in young children and experience teaching in a Waldorf home preschool, as well as mothering her two children. She has a BA in Environmental Conservation from the University of Colorado at Boulder; a Certificate in Wetlands Studies from the UW, and completed her Waldorf teacher training at Sound Circle.

There will be monthly parent evenings held throughout the school year. This is a time for sharing questions and resources. We will also explore the foundations of Waldorf early childhood education. Private annual conferences offer parents time to discuss in-depth their child’s development alone with the teacher.
